Young people are lobbying for better sports facilities in Sarajevo (9 –14 July 2007)

Within the “Lobbying for Better Sports Facilities” project, OIA, in partnership with British Council, in the period from 9 to 14 July hosted a group of young people from Great Britain, who visited Sarajevo and implemented numerous activities. OIA is also cooperating with Sefton Youth Service on the project implemented in the spirit of Olympic Games that are to be held in London in 2012. 

On 12 July 2007, guests from Great Britain and their hosts organized a round table in the premises of “Centar” Municipality on the topic of: “Lobbying for Better Sports Facilities in the Area of Sarajevo Canton”, which was attended by representatives of local authorities.  On this occasion, young people from Sefton presented the importance and position of sports in their society, and offered some examples of good practice that could be implemented in the area of Sarajevo Canton.

The conclusion of this discussion was that there are not enough sports facilities in the area of Sarajevo Canton, that during construction of such facilities no previous research about the actual needs of young people is performed, that there is a very small number of multipurpose facilities, that young people are inadequately informed about sports activities offered by local authorities, and that it is necessary to promote the values of sports among young people, and instigate local authorities to give more importance to sports.

On 13 July 2007, at the "Asim Ferhatovic – Hase" city stadium, a big sports manifestation was organized as part of this project, at which young people had the opportunity to have fun, win valuable awards, and promote sports values and olympic spirit of our city.

The visit of young British people to Sarajevo will be followed by visit of young people from B&H to Sefton in the period from 25 August - 2 September 2007, when they will, together with their Sefton colleagues, implement similar activities in their city. Final manifestation will be held on 31 August 2007, at the city stadium in Manchester, where all countries participating in this regional project will present joint activities and in that way give their contribution to 2012 Olypmic Games  in London.
